Airline pilots will use one of three techniques when landing in a crosswind.
While the writer is a pilot who may think these kinds of landings are “not as scary as they seem”, I can tell him that, as a passenger, they can be terrifying. Still, it’s interesting to read about them and know pilots train for them.
As a private pilot, I can see how they are scary to passengers, but they are a lot of fun for us. I love a crosswind landing, especially when I nail it.
I think they’d be less scary if the pilot gave some advance warning (I understand they may not be allowed to). But sitting in coach and “suddenly” having the plane skew sideways is NOT fun. 🙂
Yeah, guess that is a little nerve racking! They are definitely busy up there though.
