Google will keep the Nest group intact inside the company. The new division will still work on hardware devices, but not necessarily thermostats or smoke detectors. In fact, Google would like Fadell to work on gadgets that make more sense for the company. Will it be a phone or a tablet? It’s unclear for now.
We suspected that Google wanted Fadell. Makes perfect sense.
Can we start calling him the Billion dollar man then?
I bet all of the other thermostat manufacturers are happy. Google just removed a competitive threat to them.
No way the guy himself is worth 3B $. And even adding all his team, that does not make sense.
Once again, Google show that they have no strategic idea, just grab what they can.
I’ll be waiting to hear stories about how hands-off Fadell’s work actually remains.
In a way, Google is the opposite of Apple.
Apple makes acquisitions with laser focus on what they buy (and for damned cheap, when you consider what they could afford) and a clear idea of how to integrate the acquisitions into the company. Meanwhile Google pays billions of dollars for individual companies and seemingly only worries about how to incorporate them after the purchase.
