Apple reports $13.1 billion first quarter profit

The Company sold 51 million iPhones, an all-time quarterly record, compared to 47.8 million in the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 26 million iPads during the quarter, also an all-time quarterly record, compared to 22.9 million in the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 4.8 million Macs, compared to 4.1 million in the year-ago quarter.

Holy shit, what a quarter.

  1. Great quarter. Would be good to see some background on the sales though.

Last year they struggled to get Mini’s out the door before December outside USA. This year was better. So was it more demand this year or just better logistics and manufacturing?

Last year they barely got the new iMac out the door before Xmas. This year I think all Macs were on sale for a good time throughout the quarter.

Still good numbers. Demand isn’t dropping off. At least people started noticing iPod’s were dropping badly and no new models last year.

I don’t mind the iPods going to a 2 year cycle to align with the new iPhone hardware. Makes a lot of sense.

  2. I’ve see some articles pinning the boost in Mac sales to 4.8m on the MacPro. While I think it will be a popular product with it’s intended market, it is not a high volume machine.

That’s beside the fact that, like the iMac last year, the MacPro is hilariously back-ordered; with few of them actually having made it into customers hands. And Apple does not count orders as sales until they ship and charge the customer.

  3. It sounds less great when you realize that the rest of the industry grew by 48%… Apple is not doomed at all, but they’ve peaked.

  4. All the new growth is seemingly at the bottom (commodity) end of the market- where they’re lots of units, but little profit. Apple doesn’t engage in that part of the computer business, and they won’t deal in that end of the mobile market either.
