Blackberry has today filed a lawsuit against startup Typo Keyboards, which is backed by Ryan Seacrest. The company alleges that Typo copied BlackBerry’s patented ‘iconic’ keyboard design.
I actually agree with BlackBerry.

I do too. There’s lots of ways to do a keyboard that don’t look like BlackBerry’s.
I do too. But I also think Blackberry should come to some type of financial agreement with Typo. They will probably make more money licensing their keyboard design than selling actual Blackberry’s…as sad as that may sound.
Yeah it is a blatant rip-off. My issue is that if you switch the players, would it be okay? For example, would it be okay for Apple to sue HP over the HP envy line?
I actually LOLd when I first saw this one. I hear them for sure on the rip but it was just funny to me.
Cue the poutrage. “Blackberry didn’t invent the mobile keyboard!!”

This seems to be a design patent, not a utility patent.
Please, let’s not pretend that this has anything to do with the “patent are bad” discussion we’re having, which are about utility patents, not design patents. Almost nobody thinks there’s an issue with design patents.
This is the best model I’ve seen from Blackberry in 5 years.
