Boston Bruins’ Milan Lucic attacked in his hometown of Vancouver:
“That’s one of the worst parts, it’s in my hometown,” he said. “Going back to the spray painting of the church and my grandparents and parents and family getting harassed during the [Stanley Cup] finals against the Canucks in 2011, and now it’s escalated to a point where I get attacked for just minding my own business. I have no reason left to defend my city and then the people of my city. I’m just disgusted and outraged that it had to come to something like that. As far as that goes, other than being at Rogers Arena, no one will ever see me in downtown Vancouver ever again.”
Vancouver is just crazy. They riot when they lose the Stanley Cup and now they attack one of their hometown hockey players. The city is an embarrassment.
Update: I mistakenly said that the city rioted after the Olympics, but they didn’t.
Well, I love Vancouver, but really really dislike the Canucks and their fans. It’s emblematic that a complete lowlife scumbag like Todd Bertuzzi (now playing for Detroit) can get away with breaking a young player’s neck and ending his career with a sucker punch from behind and not do serious jail time. (with collusion from Coach Crawford)
Lucic makes an unsympathetic poster child, though.
As someone who lives in downtown Vancouver the worst part is all these clowns are never from here. Most people I know (who live downtown) don’t go out on Granville because it’s where all the idiots (from out of town) gather.
A correction to your Vancouver hate, there wasn’t a riot during the Olympics.
Also, as a Boston Fan you should remember in 1970 Bruins fans attacked players on the bench to the point where the police had to be called.

Speaking of embarrassments, I see no mention of Brad Marchand.
Someone always brings up Bertuzzi. You’re the same people that support Thornton as an honest player who didn’t really mean it, and somehow also support Steve Moore for being a cheap shot blind siding wimp who can’t stand up for himself outside the courtroom.
There’s a great number of us who didn’t riot, and if we saw Lucic on the street would be proud of his history here and shake his hand, even if we despise the hypocritical, diving goons embodied by the team he’s on now, with the exception of Iginla, who took every PIM the other night.

What’s really emblematic is how people pick and choose what events the remember to try and prove their point.
There have been lots of “complete lowlife scumbags” playing in the NHL for lots of different teams.
Hating on one team or city because of those scumbags is silly.

So I guess you didn’t read my post, which started out with “I love Vancouver”. Further, you seem to miss the nuance that the situation with Crawford, Betruzzi and the Canucks is NOT equivalent in any way to the “lots” of lowlife scumbags in the NHL. What sets this apart is the fact that Crawford and the Canucks essentially put a bounty on an opposing player, and Bertuzzi “earned” it by ending the kid’s career by sucker punching him FROM BEHIND. I guess you also consider it standard for players to plead guilty to criminal charges, but, because it’s the Canucks, get off with a year’s probation and 2 weeks community service.

Steve Moore’s hit on Naslund was not called a penalty because it was, and still is, considered a clean hit in the NHL.
Why do you suppose Bertuzzi, if he was acting as the “lone gunman” sued Marc Crawford, and said he was at least partially responsible for Moore’s injuries?

Look at the video – if you think Bertuzzi’s assault is “justified” based on Moore’s clean hit on Naslund – I guess you pretty much demonstrate what Canucks fans are like.

Which I would agree with if that’s what anyone was saying, but it’s not. Are there rabid hockey fans everywhere? Sure. Are there douchbag hockey fans everywhere? Sure. But it’s statements like “and somehow also support Steve Moore for being a cheap shot blind siding wimp who can’t stand up for himself outside the courtroom.” that demonstrate why Canucks and their fans stand apart in the eyes of the world. If you watch Bertuzzi’s assault on Steve Moore and try to justify it you are automatically demonstrating Jim’s point.

I’ve lived in Vancouver almost all my life, and what happened after the 2011 and 1994 Stanley Cup finals is embarrassing and frustration for the 99.9999% of the citizens who didn’t participate. No mention is made, I see, of the hundreds and hundreds of citizens who descended on the downtown core very early next morning to help clean up the mess. No mention is made of the temporary wooden wall that went up around The Bay department store; a wall that was just meant to be in place until the broken glass windows were replaced, but a wall that became a place where thousands of people came to over the next few weeks to view and write messages about how they felt about the riot–messages that were heart-felt and powerful, and made me proud to be a Vancouverite. But that doesn’t get play outside this city, because we love painting people we’ve never met with a big brush of shame.
In Jim’s diatribe against my city and thousands upon thousands of Canuck fans who have never been involved in a riot or any other incident, I see other cities get a free pass. Cities like Montreal, who have had five Stanley Cup playoff riots sin their history, most of those in the last 30 years. Or Edmonton. Or Boston. Or Los Angeles. Or Detroit. Or Toronto. True, the latter happened during the 2010 G20 meetings, but they haven’t had a team near the Stanley Cup since the 1960s, so it’s hard or judge what they would do at this point.
Nor do I see any mention of the far worse fan-related violence in other cities in this year alone. In a city of 2.5 million people, one drunken idiot allegedly taking a pot-shot a Milan Lucic outside a bar at 2am is supposed to represent all of us, yet a SF Giants fans stabs to death a Dodgers fan outside Candlestick Park doesn’t represent Giants sports fans? Or how about the Blackhawks fan who stole the Jets Adam Pardy’s helmet after he was knocked through the glass, then poured beer on his head? Are all Chicago fans like that?
What happened to Lucic has happened dozens and dozens of times over the years in cities around North America. I don’t like it, it’s ugly, but it’s not unique. We should also remember at this point that we only have the Lucic side of the story, and he looked to be not quite sober himself at the time.
Finally, if you’re going to judge us over the 2011 Stanley Cup riot, don’t forget about the 2010 Olympics, where there were hundreds of thousands of people having fun in the streets almost every night of the Games, with almost no incidents whatsoever. In fact, it was probably that event that took us off our guard, as for almost every night of the last two rounds of the 2011 Stanley Cup finals there were also tens of thousands of people in the streets, watching the games on big screen TVs set up by the city. For every night up until game 7 things were great. People had fun. But game 7 wrecked all that, and that is what we are judged for. Understandable, but I wish there was just a little more balance about it all.
I’m a Canucks fan. I have been for 33 years. And I thought what Bertuzzi did to Steve Moore was atrocious and easily deserved the suspension it got. I also think calling Steve Moore a coward is asinine.
I hope that now, since you seem to think one silly comment in an online discussion allows you to paint all Canuck fans with the same brush, I’m hoping that perhaps another a differing opinion from yet another Canucks fan may persuade you to think of us differently.
Once last point. Bertuzzi, Crawford and almost everyone else from the 2004 Canucks have now moved on, so perhaps it’s time to judge today’s team by its own successes and mistakes. Of course, if you still want to rain down on Bertuzzi for what happened, he is playing for Detroit now.
Vancouver is probably the worst city in Canada. Every time I have to deal with people from there they’re either complete dicks or they don’t speak english and are complete dicks.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. As I said, I love Vancouver, and that’s why it’s so sad that the Canucks and so many of their fans suck. I was watching the game when Bertuzzi assaulted Moore, and it left a scar. But what lingers, long after the event, is the reaction of so many of the Canucks fans. Hint: it’s very different from yours. (see above) And I wasn’t a Red Wings fan even before Bertuzzi.

Yeah I have been to Toronto a number of times…they’re good sports fans (coming from B’s and Sox fan). Helps they don’t riot as well. Can’t say much for Vancouver…worst spots city in North America I’d say.
