SantaCons of years past have been distinguished by sexism, drunkenness, xenophobia, homophobia and enough incidents of public vomiting and urination to fill an infinite dunk tank. Despite these rampant violations, the departing police commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly, recently praised SantaCon, claiming that it “makes New York New York.”
So “sexism, drunkenness, xenophobia, homophobia” are what make New York be New York? Bull.
While they are always exceptions, outliers, and assholes, you won’t see much homophobia in SF on Saturday (especially on the “Castro Route”).
I dunno, those things are pretty much what I think of when someone mentions NY, along with shitty pizza and a radio antenna they pretend gives them the tallest US building…
Raymond Kelly isn’t a cop, he’s a symptom.

so then why dont we cancel st patricks day, its 100 times worse. that holiday is a god damn embarassment for humanity.
There’s SantaCon crap here, too, but I don’t notice anything there but the drunkenness.
The problem must be New Yorkers, not dressing like Santa and drinking.

The Times still printed it (literally!) and didn’t reject it.
That he’s not on the permanent Editorial Board doesn’t change anything – it’s not like this was an un-vetted online “contributor” where the Times had nothing to do with the content.
My point was that this was opinion, not reporting. We all could benefit if more of our sources made that distinction, don’t you think?
