as other articles have pointed out, and I have experienced as an embedded system programmer, Android is the “new Linux” (yes I know it runs the Linux kernel). It is being used for things other than what an iPad or iPhone are being used for, great if you want to roll an embedded device with a modern looking graphical UI, but it does not directly help Android as a smartphone/tablet market force that help companies actually make money.

I’m quoting the very same article that is being used here as the source, click the link and see for yourself. And the quote I used from the article presumably comes directly from Adobe (or at least it’s been used as if it was)
I think a lot of Android tablets are just impulse buys by and for people who really don’t yet understand what a tablet could and should be use for. When you’re stuck with a sub $100 device than can barely function, it goes in the back of the closet. My wife and I both spent some time this morning shopping online – we sat together on the couch picking stuff out and ended up ordering with our respective iPads.
Doesn’t Apple make all or most of their revenue and profit from the sale of the device, and not from App Store purchases? If so, market share would seem to mean a great deal, since every Android purchase is one less iPhone that gets purchased.
Apple does makes a lot of revenue and profit off software, but I believe the bulk of that is off of Mac software, not iOS.
Market share means nothing if the one reporting it defines his own market. Most of those android devices are only smartphones in the definition of the reporters.
The bible has a very high market share under history books, if you define “history book” as a book that starts with the words “in the beginning”.

Nope, not every sold Android phone or Android tablet is one less iPhone/iPad sold.
Just 20 minutes ago I read a thread in a forum with someone asking for the best tablet for 120-150€ for a friend.
People recommended a 7″ tablet by ASUS.
His friend would never have bought an iPad, which starts at 289€.
Completely different target audience.
His friend will also most likely never get another tablet, when she realizes that the one she got sucks, so maybe THERE is a lost iPad sale in the future, but not in the initial sale.
That’s also the major reason for the findings reported by Business Insider.
There is only a single expensive 10″ Android tablet left, the Galaxy Note 10.1.
All the others are cheap cheap cheap 7″ devices, a few 8.9″ devices (also cheap) and a few 10.1″ devices, the majority of them with cheap 1280×800 displays, because manufacturers realized that nobody buys more expensive 10.1″ devices with FullHD displays.
When those products are marketed mainly on the low price it’s obvious they will attract buyers that only care for the low price – likely because they have lower incomes (in comparison to those who bought an 499€ and higher iPad) and less spending power.
I assume you don’t read Business Insider much. Here’s the thing. Some of the writers are OK, but honestly? Henry Blodget is only after hits. Shame on Shawn for even thinking of linking to this. Especially as Shawn hates this kind of stuff…
Generally (and rightfully) true but this is less an BI story and more of a “Both IBM and Adobe are reporting…” story.
This is complete BS. Of course market share means something, even if it doesn’t generate revenue. Market share isn’t everything, but it’s also not nothing.
