The Federal Communications Commission will propose allowing passengers to use their cellphones on airplanes, people familiar with the matter said.
While phone use would still be restricted during takeoff and landing, the proposal would lift an FCC ban on airborne calls and cellular data use by passengers once a flight reaches 10,000 feet, an FCC official said.

I wonder how often the reception is actually good enough to make a cellular call? Out of curiosity, I have (briefly) turned airplane mode off during a flight before, but always found no reception. Or maybe that was just AT&T 🙂
reception up in the air is usually lost around 5000 feet. But I wholeheartedly agree that if you are obnoxious on your cell, I’m breaking it into a million pieces and selling it off for spare parts.
Because air travel doesn’t yet sufficiently resemble six hours on a Greyhound bus.
