MacRumors site hacked, some user data exposed

If you’ve got a MacRumors forum account, change your password and change the password for any other accounts that use the same password.

  1. This is why I wish not all sites require complex passwords. For news sites, blogs, and forums, rarely is there any personal information worth protecting. I usually use the same or similar simple password for them if I can, and keep it distinct from passwords that actually secure things that matter.

  2. It’s not just about protecting your personal information. It’s about protecting your reputation. If your username on a given site is traceable to you, it would be quite easy for someone to engage in questionable behaviors post-hack that could have an impact on you. My username on MacRumors is “nadyne”. There aren’t many people with my name in the world, and I often snag that as my username if possible. As a result, if my MacRumors account were to get compromised, someone using my account and going around harassing others, spamming, or simply being a jerk would probably come back to haunt me.
