It was a long road to OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Mac OS X was first introduced as a public beta (codenamed Kodiak) in September of 2000, and beta it was – a radical departure from Mac OS 9, both in look (introducing the “Aqua” interface) and in operation. Mac OS X was built on a UNIX foundation, and was more closely related to the NextStep operating system that had been developed by NeXT, the computing company Steve Jobs founded between stints running Apple.
This brought back some memories.
It’s amazing to think how long I have been using Apple’s systems sometimes.
From system 6.02 on a IICX to present day with Mavericks on my iMac. I still remember thinking with System 6, there was no way I was going to use the “Multi Finder”. I mean, why? I was already in the application I needed to use and it was more stable! How times change.
Then, many years later, using the first OS X beta. It was pretty to look at, but I could not get anything done. Yet, there I was looking at the new OS thinking of all it could be. Now here we are. I can’t wait to see what the next 25 years brings.
My history is pretty much the same.
I remember that by OS X 10.0.5 or so, I was booting to OS X. However, I was basically using it as a faster booting OS 9 machine. Not that OS X started fast, but Classic restarted quickly.
All of my apps could run in Classic… some I had to force to run in Classic, because the OS X “experience” of the app was so absurdly unfinished. There were apps that were completely incompatible with it, but if you were lucky enough not to use those it was great. Right up until it was dropped, the Classic experience continued to improve. By 10.1, it was not just faster but better.
The OS X stuff was nice, but there was so little of it at first, and so many of the Carbon apps were just unfinished. That got better.
Yup, I remember using it to boot OS 9 too and thinking “go ahead, crash, il just reboot you in about 2 minutes!” Which is when it began to dawn on me just how stable OS X was. Shortly thereafter I couldn’t wait for the applications to be ported better and then written in Cocoa.

I kind of miss those days until I realise I can just use my computer these days. I went back once into OS 9 when I still could, it was not as great as I remembered. Kind of like listening to an old band you used to love and thinking what the????
I could reminisce all day, I was about to get into extensions and DA’s. : D
You want memories? I just loaded Tiger on a dual 2 gig G5 PowerMac…
Pfft. I was just in FileMaker Pro on a PowerPC Mac in OS 8. Ha ha, I didn’t even notice the model. We have it sitting there just for that database! I exported the FileMaker file it as a tab delimited file so we don’t have to use it anymore, poor old Mac.
