  1. Two minutes of robots; two seconds of people. I suspect this is how Apple will bring production back to the US. Can you say ‘jobless recovery”?

    Or would you prefer to pay ten times as much for a product that was fully handmade?

  3. Right. I’m a huge Apple fan. Just feeling lately that our legal personification of corporations and their technical personification of robots won’t be anything but bad news for real live persons as time goes by.

  5. Welcome to the 21st century. Of course they are not filing down steel blocks by hand and polishing them with artisanal beach sand. But they are creating actual jobs in the US vs. doing it in the cheapest, most remote location they could find.

    I’m sorry, but such a narrow view doesn’t help in the context of something as large and complicated as the US economy. Someones gotta build those robots. Someones gotta maintain those robots. Someone has to operate those robots. People still need to do a lot of the assembly that robots just can’t do. The robots simply enable processes that are either impossible or incredibly ineffecient without.

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but the proliferation of Apple products has created an entirely new and booming job market, “app” developers. USA is the absolute epicenter of this job market. And that proliferation of devices was made possible by incredibly advanced manufacturing procedures like these.

    But I didn’t realize the only way Apple could help contribute to jobs was strictly through 1900s era manufacturing work.

  7. Any other company would have done this using sheet metal punching, bending and welding. Cost a lot less in starting capital, looks okish (but not as good as Apple want it seems) and is the standard tech used everywhere you need enclosures.

    But there would be seams !

    It is rather amazing that they use deep drawing methods. You only use that kind of thing when you need both precision and very high resistance (typically pressure bottles). And worse, they use impact draw finishing.

    A very costly way to manufacture a blank that will then be turned, especially in starting costs. Would make more sense on a high volume item where the latter costs are amortized on numbers

  8. I’ve worked in manufacturing for years now and frankly automation is the only way to get anything done these days. People just don’t work like they use too. Between the drugs, laziness and the welfare mentality you as a manufacture have no choice but to automate as much as you can.

  9. Manufacturing is extremely important to any economy, in the USA we lost sight of that. That doesn’t mean hundreds of people lined up on assembly lines though. Ideally these factories need to be built to minimize the number of people employed.

    I agree with many of your points above but I think you go overboard in dismissing the importance of manufacturing.

  10. Get a life! You have taken to stewing over a legal concept you have no understanding of.

    As to the personification of robots that often comes from the employees working with those robots. In many cases the worker realizes that the robot is taking on tasks that are simply not safe or maybe more so very boring. Then there is the reality that robots are often far more reliable and effective than the humans they replace.
