Sounds like a good number of features will require this patch from the get-go. Which means a real test of Sony’s servers on day one. And, I suspect, on Christmas Day.
Buying a PS4? Expect a 300 MB day-one patch

It’s the missing DVD/Blu-ray playback that got me. How is there any excuse for that?
300 MB is pretty tiny compared to people downloading big PS3 titles like The Last of Us and GTA 5 when they launched. The account creation servers are more likely to be hammered.
This does show how close to the wire Sony is cutting this (and probably Microsoft too). This software update adds features that Sony has been promoting for quite a while now.
Already preordered, so i guess will see whats the what…
Can’t be worse than the Wii U patch. That thing was atrocious.
PS4 is closer to X1 than Sony is willing to advertise.
That’svery easy to answer:
Licensing!
The same reason why Windows 8 shipped without support for DVD playback.
Few people (in the target audience of the PS4) are still buying DVDs, so why should Sony pay X dollars for every shipped PS4, when they could force those who want to play DVDs and Blurays to download the (free) DVD/Bluray playback component instead.
That way they’ll only have to pay royalties for the number of playback component downloaders.
Another reason for the lack of Bluray playback without the patch: Copy protection of Bluray discs needs constant patching. Wanna playback Man of Steel on a PS4 that has been manufactured 3 months ago with a firmware that’s 4 months old? There’s a high chance that it wouldn’t even load, IF Bluray playback were included without day1 patch
