Jony Ive designed Leica camera

Wow, nice.

  1. A usability desaster for M users (who like to shoot in manual mode – they are no longer able to change shutter speed while the camera is at their eyes; you can with the “original” design of an M).

    Bad design, just fashionable.

  2. It’s a one-of-a-kind. I don’t think anyone plucking down the cash actually cares about that.

  3. Nothing says good UI like “unmarked buttons”…

I’m with Tafelapfel; it looks nice, but it doesn’t seem like all that great a camera, in terms of using-it-as-a-camera.

(And I don’t think “but it’s a one-off for charity” is a good excuse for bad design, either.)

  4. Yeah, and what I didn’t see at first: The lens seems to be nearly un-operable without looking at it! All those protruding rings in a “normal” lens design are for tactile feedback of where your fingers are. This is totally missing here.

The M has no autofocus or S mode at all, so you can’t operate it with full automation – you need tactile feedback all the time! So the design is completely against the functionality of the camera.

“Design is how it works.” Where have I read this … 😉

  5. Like Blinx182 said, these are one-off pieces for a charity auction. That puts it in the same category as art and memorabilia. It’s primary use is to catch eyeballs and raise money for a cause. With those goals in mind, I think it’s designed quite well. Much better than he “original”.

    Design for use.
