A history of beards in the workplace

People are scared of beards.

  1. I have never had any negative feedback in regard to my beard in the newsroom. I have shaved it off twice during my thirty plus years on the job. Once because I was shooting a story on a local fire departments fire academy and I needed to maintain a good seal on the facemask when I went into a burning building and the second time is when I turned 50 and I wanted to do it with no grey on my head (the beard was the only thing that had grey in it).
Though if I find myself out of work like the photo staff at the Chicago Sun TImes, then most likely the beard will come off when I go job hunting.

  2. We never have had an issue here. But, these days I’m reluctant to grow mine out because it certifies my status as “the grumpy old man” in our web dev dept.

    Now…Get off my lawn

  3. “Politicians, public servants and businessmen – and apparently journalists – risk their reputations if they abandon the razor,” says Oldstone-Moore.

^ My old pastor tried to get me to shave for the businessman perspective. It didn’t work. #beardforlife
