Samsung’s copy of Apple’s Passbook goes live

Samsung Wallet hit the Google Play Store on Thursday and bears a strong resemblance to the Passbook feature Apple includes on iOS. The app was announced in beta for developers back in February, but it has only just now made it to the Play Store. It is compatible with the Galaxy S3, S4, Note, and Note 2.

  1. Given that there is an Android app that uses Apple’s passbook system, why is Samsung even doing this?

  2. It’s called “passing off”. If they release (yet another) complete rip-off of what Apple do their fans will completely rewrite the timeline and claim that Apple is ripping them off.

And they have the lawyers to keep that going for decades.

  4. I noticed this yesterday. There’s certainly less skeuomorphism, but I was definitely reminded of Passport by its layout. Be a little less flagrant, Samsung.
