Shawn Blanc has a great article on how he recently self-published his new book, including the tools he used and the problems he ran into. Worth a read.
Self-publishing a book

Hell of a list of resources.
I took an ePub production course in winter of 2011, and did a couple of ePub projects shortly thereafter. While I’m happy to see what Blanc’s workflow had in common with my own, I’m damned sad to read him saying ePubs are still a “world of hurt.” Even the simpler of the pair of books I tried to process required a ton of cleanup after export from layout files, and that was over a year and a half (and two versions of Adobe Indesign) ago.
Needless to say, I won’t be seeking additional ePub projects to work on until the means to create one becomes more sensible.
My return to writing will be self published. Great timing/resources.
