Jim would’ve run, otherwise the beard might’ve taken it for a snack, forcing Monique to pick bones out of the beard for months.

So, the man claims he didn’t try to provoke the animal, the author writes “Sure.” (as in bullshit, but avoiding the pun) and then in the next paragraph starts with “these attacks seem to be increasingly common”. In that case, you should give the guy the benefit of the doubt.
Oh, and I think Jim’s laugh could also scare off the bison 🙂
