Apple’s Support Page just posted additional details about the Mac mini (Late 2012) and iMac (Late 2012) Fusion Drive announced at Yesterday’s Apple Event.
As Apple says, “Presented as a single volume on your Mac, Fusion Drive automatically and dynamically moves frequently used files to Flash storage for quicker access, while infrequently used items move to the hard disk.”
There are some interesting tidbits such as you can only have one partition on the hard disk, third party utilities “may or may not” work (not unexpected) and some details about using Time Machine backups.
I wonder why the 3 TB drive cannot be partitioned?
One additional partition. Two total.
Currently I use an external FW800 drive on my Mac Mini. I’d love to be able to install an internal SSD that “just worked” with the existing volume. Too bad it looks like that is not yet the plan.
Ah, that page explains a question I had regarding Boot Camp. It looks like a Windows partition will not be able to take advantage of the performance gains afforded by the SSD, because its partition will reside entirely on the HDD. Even so, I was worried that Boot Camp support would be something that’d come later, so I’m pleased to hear that they have it from the get-go (aside from with the 3TB Fusion Drive option on the iMac, apparently).
Hmmm.. Would Parallels with Fusion assistance be faster than Boot Camp without?
Does anyone know the type of memory technology used for the SSD, as SLC or MLC and what is the manufacturer of the SSD?
