I pre-ordered an iPhone 5 and also found it incredibly easy. I just entered my account # and password with AT&T when I ordered the phone on-line. When it arrived, I just turned it on and it activated with my cell # and my old AT&T phone no longer had service. My AT&T contract was automatically terminated as well.
The only headache that I had was that my wife and I both ordered phones, and there was no way to set up a Verizon family plan ahead of time. I needed to activate the phones and then call Verizon. Given that it was Sep 21, I ended up spending a half hour to get it done (mostly on hold because Verizon was so busy that day). It would probably take 10 minutes on a normal day.
I’ve been happy with Verizon here in Portland, OR. LTE is great, although when I’ve been away from LTE I often find my internet doesn’t work at all. I haven’t figured out if I’m running into Verizon dead spots or if there is an iPhone5 problem.
Yeah, but then I consider the fact that the don’t offer individual plans anymore and that, for 2 gigs of data I’d be paying $100 a month. Suddenly, they look like giant sacks of shit, regardless of ease. Still, good to hear the LTE in Portland is solid. That’ll help…
Exactly what Ian said about the lack of individual plans. “Share everything” is a big scam if you are one person with one device.
Plus if your area code doesn’t match your billing address (i.e. you moved to a new city and kept your old number), porting it can prove impossible, though maybe Verizon would play ball and let you fib about your address for porting purposes.
So, I stuck with AT&T. Verizon would have had me if not for this Share Everything BS (and my grandfathered $10/mo text plan on AT&T).
Yep, to approximate what I have with AT&T is $35 more each month with Verizon ($70 vs. $105).
That said, I’m thinking about buying a Verizon iPhone 5 outright as it is unlocked for AT&T/T-Mobile/StraightTalk and it will give me the option of also using Verizon, too. No one has LTE where I live, so that’s not important to me.

We’re currently with AT&T, which of course gives me that option … but since the pre-order date I’ve been mulling over when that comes up, and I can’t even remember the last time I needed it, so maybe I don’t care (like BB).
We can’t even use our cells at the home/office, but based on friends and family phones I’ve had here on Verizon, the voice is at least very good, and we have Wifi, so we could do v/d simultaneous if for some reason we needed it.
So I need tethering on occasion, we’d need 2-4GB data plan, AT&T is ~$130 with 2 iPhones, 250MB + 4GB + 1 tether + unlimited voice, 1000 text, Verizon 4GB family would be ~$150, though we’d get to actually use our phones at the house so we could kill the long distance plan on the landline, that’s probably $20-25. Plus both could tether. Hmmm …
… seems like a decent switch (sorry, thinking out loud, but would entertain any comments 🙂 )
I switched from AT&T to a family plan on my fiancee’s Verizon account. Did it all from the Apple site, haven’t had to deal directly with Verizon once. Great experience, but then again I’m not porting my number either.
