Apple’s magic is in The Turn, not The Prestige

TechCrunch:

Apple took something ordinary, a phone, did some extraordinary things to it, and then made it re-appear in grandiose fashion. It’s a great trick. It’s so good, in fact, that I think it’s fair to call it true magic.

The problem, if you want to call it that, is that Apple has now been doing this trick since 2007. Granted, they have other solid tricks too (they are far from the one-trick pony claims that several of their competitors face). But the iPhone is the best trick in their bag. And in the last few years, some people have gotten sick of seeing it.

But it’s important to remember that just because you’ve seen a show before, it doesn’t make actually make it any less magical. It’s a perception issue.

Interesting way of looking at the discussion surrounding yesterday’s iPhone 5 launch.

  1. Whats up with all these kind of metaphors like this one?!

It’s not A trick, it’s years of R&D, really hard work from engineers to designers, so at the end great ideas become inevitably great products. If you good at it the result is something like an iPhone or an iPod or a Mac. If you’re not, then the result will everything else but good.

It’s not a trick, it’s: IQ, Effort and a touch of genius.

  2. Why didn’t these geniuses write about PC being a one trick pony.
Intel Processors, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows, etc.

  3. It was originally a trick (or appeared magical) when Jobs said “it just works”. But that has worn off, and it’s no longer the same presentation.

Yesterday’s presentation placed a lot of emphasis on engineering. The hood was raised and we got to see the engine. No more Jobs, no more magic. Now the presentation is about hard work.

  4. I agree, an interesting way of looking at it. I usually never watch a movie twice. “The thrill” is usually gone after the first watch. However, if you are not an iPhone 4 or 4s user already, there are significant enough changes to warrant an upgrade.

  5. The prestige REALLY worth multiple watch.

    1) The movie give you the ending answer in the first 5 minutes of the movie with the bird analogy and the little boy… You just don’t understand it in the first viewing.

    2) When you know the thruth about Christian Bale character, you really understand what is happening all along. (Wife relationship, Knot)

    3) The timeline feel completely different once you understand !

The film itself is a magic trick…. tough “The Prestige” is the perfect title !

  6. It’s a trick if you’re impressed by new things and are easily distracted. Then, if you’re fortunate, you grow up, and you realize that great work takes effort and skill.
