A Kindle at every price

512 Pixels:

In preparing for tomorrow’s podcast, I decided to type up a list of Amazon’s pricing for the Kindles. Here’s the complete list.

I won’t steal the pertinent information from the site (others will though) but before you click through, take a guess at how many price points Amazon has for the Kindle and then guess how many Apple has for the iPad. It’s hard not to imagine that Amazon is creating their own “Paralysis of Choice“. Thanks to Matthew Panzarino for the link.

  1. But that comparison is kinda disingenuous, right? If you’re going to consider a Kindle with “special offers” as a separate model from one without, then you have to consider the white iPad as separate from the black one, and a version with 3G as separate from a version without.

If you include the iPad 2, Apple has 16 different configurations of iPad, not 8, as the article claims.

Not trying to be a hater, just pointing out that if you listed out every possible combination of iPad out like the Kindles are in that article, the list would be even longer.

  2. By my count, 16 for Apple and 22 for Amazon but he’s counting 1 product twice for Amazon and not doing the same for Apple.

Count Amazon once for special offers (like he does “on contract” for Apple) and you come out with 11 Amazon and 16 Apple.

    backfired

  3. Amazon sells the “Special Offers” Kindle as a separate item from the ones without. With the iPads, the colors don’t affect price, which is what my article is meant to look at, not total number of SKUs.

  4. It’s obvious that 22 Amazon kindle devices are much more complicated than this mess: 44 devices, 38 if you discard the the iPad Air (just guessing the number of models). And 88/76 if you count black and white as a separated devices.

  5. Colors don’t change the price.

If you look at the iPad costs vs the Fire HD, the Fire is easier since it is 32GB only and with/without 4G. You don’t have a “paralysis of choice” in determining the right size you should get. There is one with 4G and one without.

  6. I think it makes sense from Amazon’s point of view as they are in a commidity business – more models = more data.

  7. I’m trying to visualize the price umbrella metaphor by imagining Bezos and Cook each trying to duck under the other’s umbrella in a rainstorm.

  8. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 comes in 4 varieties. Without 4G: 16 or 32 GB. With 4G: 32 or 64 GB. Check their store.
