I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Windows 8 is the worst computing experience I’ve ever had. As a desktop operating system, it’s annoying, frustrating, irritating, and baffling to use. I’ve tried on many occasions to explain exactly why it’s so awful to use day-to-day, and most of the time, smoke starts pouring out of my ears. I thought it would be better to get down exactly what the issues are and why you should avoid it.
And that was the nice thing he had to say.
I use a mac, but I think Windows 8 is a big step forward from previous Windows versions.
Fro me, that quote describes every Windows version I’ve ever used. People would say Windows 7 is so much better than Vista and XP. And I would say “really? In what way?” Answers would be all about security and stability. None of it was about usability. The fact is, usability in Windows hasn’t really changed much since Windows 95.
Boy, check out the vilification in his comments from angry Windows fans. Think he hit a nerve?
First of all, Edwards is a terrible writer and it was hard for me to just read that review. Secondly, many of his points were incorrect or simply overstated opinions on something that annoyed him. Exempli gratia:
“Metro programs have no window controls and take up the entire screen. Therefore, there’s no easy way to switch between them using on-screen controls. You have to engage in unfamiliar mouse movements to swap between them.”
That’s his personal opinion. I didn’t find it user-surly at all. It may take a little time to get used to, but so do changes in any operating system. When Apple introduced Natural Scrolling, for instance, people disliked it because things were exactly the opposite. After a while though, I got used to it. In all honesty, it was easier to use a trackpad than Magic Mouse since it actually felt a little bit more natural with your hand closer to the thing you’re controlling.
Edwards is an absurdist who loathes minimalism and has his own obstinate opinion. Everyone can be like this and I am as well at times, but he decided to bash every single little aspect of the operating system just because he doesn’t like to use it. I’d rather read a short paragraph of him asserting that the operating system is simply not for him. What he wrote is unnecessary, even of a critic.
Window 8 is pointless. Almost every time I try to do something on my computer, a random tile would always pop up. For example, if I was using the internet on my desktop, the internet tile would randomly appear in the middle of my research…or the camera would randomly appear. It’s annoying to always have to exit, and then go back to my research.
Windows 8 is a very frustrating un user friendly OS. Microsoft, please slap yourself.
ya I too find it very irritating as it stops my momentum at work or at home by moving away from conventional functioning. New ideas and feature welcome but not at the cost of customers comfort. we feel that new features are just dictat from Microsoft as there is no alternate feature available to switch back to old features should customers need to work without breaking their momentum. Am very upset and every now and then I have to borrow my friends old system to do my certain work. eg: search from outlook, browse files from iphone handset, get common inbox for ms outlook for multiple mails. There might be some ways to correct it but easy – guide is not available from the affected programs.
