Sony Q1 profit plummets 77%

Sony on Thursday reported its results for the first fiscal quarter of 2012. The struggling Japan-based consumer electronics giant posted $79 million in operating profit for its June quarter, down 77% from the same quarter one year earlier. Analysts were expecting nearly triple the income Sony reported

Brutal.

  1. Waht, if Apple buys Sony!? That would be amazing … Think about. Think about Apple and Cameras, Playstation, Music and the hole tech industry, that Sony builds in the last decades.

  2. I have to add something and to correct my spelling:
“What, if Apple buys Sony!? That would be amazing … Think about it. Think about Apple and Cameras, Playstation, Music and the hole tech industry, that Sony built in the last decades, in the hands of Apple. Also SJ liked Sony’s design language. I know its not happening and Apple has no interest in being a good at everything, because they want to be perfect in a few.”

  3. Sony no longer has anything to offer Apple, or the market. PS3 is not the dominant camera maker, game console maker, and Apple doesn’t need to be a record label.

You are correct in Apple does not want to be good at everything, but in all honesty, what is Sony really good at these days? They lost their TV edge in the switch to LCD TVs, they lost their Gaming edge to XBox, and they’re third place in cameras next to Nikon and Canon.

Sony needs to come out with a new and unique product soon, or they’re going to continue their slide into irrelevance.

  4. Well, I think Sony does have lots of patents, the have technology which Apple could use to be more independent from companys like Samsung. They could build on top of Sony’s hardware like PS3 with Apple’s idea of a game console. But it was just an idea, nothing that that would last long.
But since when is the third place in cameras bad?

  5. The reason Sony failed was because it allowed
Samsung to copy it. It didn’t help that Korean Won
was devalued in East Asia financial crisis
    while the Yen strengthened.
Those patents didn’t help against Samsung and South Korea.

  6. Third place is bad because it doesn’t bring anything new to market. Apple doesn’t enter a market unless they feel they can bring something new to it. Right now Sony isn’t bringing anything significant to the market than Nikon and Canon aren’t already delivering.

You do have a point about patents though. But currently Sony is bigger than their patent portfolio, probably too big to buy just to get their patents.
