I think “here are the placeholders” are more appropriate, tbh.
No Price, No Release Date, Not much other than “Don’t buy Apple, we have new shiny. Don’t look at them, we have choices!” “You have Apps?” “We have choices!!!!!”
Poor Microsoft, to get first mover advantage over Google, they have to get bludgeoned by Apple’s “shipping now” ringing in their ears.
Doesn’t it seem a bit risky for Microsoft to be shipping their own hardware? One of their biggest assets is all of the OEMs that buy their OS and build 100 different flavours of device. By making their own hardware (and charging almost $100 for the tablet OS), it seems that all of the various hardware makers out there are just going to stick with Android.
“Doesn’t it seem a bit risky for Microsoft to be shipping their own hardware? ”
Given what the hardware producers are able to do compared to Apple, it’s probably more of a risk for MS to leave it to others to build the hardware alone.
How will this effect Apple? Yet to be seen. No release date, no price leave much up in the air. At the very least this is evidence that MS has at least heard the wake up call, and is trying it’s damndest to make up for not only its own lack of innovation in recent years, but the lack of innovation of it’s hardware partners.
How will this effect Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.? Their glory days are behind them, and Microsoft is not willing to go down with their ships. MS is issuing their own wake up call to them.
Hey, it is the MS-toaster-fridge!
There any reports on the trackpad or can we safely assume it is junk like all the other Windows trackpads (i.e. forcing you to touch the screen to navigate effectively).
Apple is doomed, of course.
HP gave up WebOS for This thing when Microsoft pressured them.
Dell thought it could compete against an ipad with Win 8.
So not only Microsoft is building a ToasterFridge but also going
after all the ultrabooks and MacBook Air at the same time with
similarly named product.
I don’t quite understand the strategy of garnering all the hype and pr for a product that has no definite ship date. Wouldn’t it make more sense to use all the publicity they are getting to sell devices?
How long will it take for someone to make a similar cover for the iPad? I’d buy that.
Seems like they’re trying to address the typical PC-weenie complaints about the iPad, namely “no keyboard! no USB! no expandable storage! It’s not a real computer!”. But of course, the people who actually care about those things are vanishingly tiny (but vocal) percentage of the tablet market. Most people, and stop me if you’ve heard this before, just want the thing to work. And all the things that the iPad is “lacking”, it lacks in the name of Just Working. None of us nerds want service calls from Uncle Bob about how he plugged his HP scanner from 2002 into his tablet, and now it doesn’t work right. Or the expandable storage thing; because apparently twenty years of grandma not knowing where to find her files hasn’t hammered home the message that the vast majority of users do not understand file systems. Ohh, I bet this thing capable of saving a file called “untitled-1” to the “desktop”. So much more powerful than that silly crippled iPad…
It’s funny, because the tech-nerd bitch about the iPad has always boiled down to “it does less things than a laptop is capable of doing”. This tablet is going to prove just how misguided that notion is, especially the Intel version. How is that thing not just a Macbook Air with a shittier keyboard?
Maybe after this thing flops some of the old-school PC guys will finally come around to the concept that the best EXPERIENCE isn’t the same thing as the MOST FEATURES. But I kind of doubt it. They’ll just blame the failure on Apple’s slick marketing. How dare Apple make the computer that people actually want to use, rather than the computers that PC geeks want people to use?
I’ll bet IT people love this thing when/if it finally ships. More issues for them to fix and support, especially for the poor consumers who get duped into buying one.
