Ryan Cash:
For people with mild OCD we’re always trying to make sure the volume level is set at an even number – say 14 or 28. Some people need it to feel even “more even” at 10 or 20.
It’s amazing how many times we do this — set the volume based on a number instead of how it sounds. But what happens when your new car doesn’t show you the volume level?
I do this all the time. Where it hurts me the most is in web development and design. A shade of gray looks better at 57% but i’ll set it to 60% anyway.
God I certainly have a love/hate relationship with my OCD’ing.
I’m definitely a mild OCD kind if guy but I never did this. Now that it was brought to my attention I will never be able to return to the bliss of not caring. Thanks for that.
@JeanMertz I think it’s a sign you’re too comfortable with your CSS. I do the same thing. 🙂
The volume in my car shall never be set to 13. Ever. 7,11,14,17, and 21 are the approved volumes …been that way for years.
I think that a volume feature is necessary because of the AUX input – say I plug in my phone (with volume limit on). I need to jack up the volume to hear what’s playing. If I plug in my iPad (with full volume), and then press play, my speakers will be blasting. It’s absolutely necessary for me to have a volume limit so I know if I will be blowing my ears out or not. I’ve tried both approaches in two different cars and volume = better for the above reason.
LOL
I’ve had this issue with my Macs for years. I always turn the volume up or down in increments of two, and if I discover it’s not even, I have to send it all the way back to 0 or max so that I can count from there in increments of 2.
It’s even worse at work, where the Dell I have has some sort of knob on the keyboard that displays on screen as I spin it. It still has discrete steps, but they are much smaller, so getting it perfectly halfway or 3/4 of the way is much more difficult.
My entertainment center’s receiver gets set in increments of five. My car’s stereo gets set in increments of 2. My iPhone and iPad get set in increments of 2, just like my Macs.
As for devices that lack an indication of volume level, bliss ensues. Unless they’re way too loud when I turn them on, then I hate them. Other than that though, I view it as taking away one more distraction.
This sort of quasi OCD pops up for me too, but it’s the worst in Lightroom. I can’t count how many times I’ve set the Fill Light to an even 10 when it really should have been 13…
Oh, FFS. Whatever. As if the majority of human beings have rock-solid detents for their moods. Please.
I don’t need no stinkin’ numbers on my knob! My radios just have a little dot on the knob and another in the 12 o’clock position. Starts about 7:00; ends about 5:00.
