iOS 6

Rene Ritchie wrote a very in-depth piece on some of the things Apple could improve on with iOS 6. He didn’t just look at elements of the current OS, but also what Apple could learn from Android, webOS and Windows.

  1. I for one like the silver interface of iOS 6, I think it looks better than the pinestripes and the blues.

  2. Wow. That dude hasn’t a clue. “More Customisation” ? “More Granular Controls” ? “Direct File Access”.

If we took his advice we’d have all the crud from other operating systems.

  3. Widgets are totally overblown. I kind of laugh when I see these HUGE clock widgets on the screen of a phone. Are people going blind?

Apple’s Notification Center isn’t bad. To me it’s easy to demonstrate. If you want to reply you tap on the notification. I think Apple could add a quick response for basic stuff like Messages that leaves you in NC after your response.

Another biggie is easy setup of social networking stuff. A Twitter or FB login should only really be needed once and new apps should just have you authenticate via Apple ID for access to approved sites/services.

Reducing the tedium in mobile products is paramount.

  4. The only thing on that list that kind of makes sense is the notion of one file system for common file types like PDF, Txt etc. but we don’t need direct access to them. If they are in one place where any app that can use that file type can see it then we don’t need to.

  5. The number 1 feature I want in ios6 is time machine. Like on the mac it would be good to be able to recover individual saved game data after my 4 year old deletes it on me. Restoring from backup through iTunes takes far too long and you have not got app by app control of that process
