Verizon wants more of its subscribers to opt for shared data plans which cover multiple devices like smartphones and tablets. To convince subscribers who’ve clung to their unlimited data plans to move to this new setup, Verizon is taking much of the choice out of the decision process: If you want to upgrade to a new 4G-compatible phone, you’re going to have to give up that unlimited data.
The carrot and stick.

Egads, I better upgrade my Mi-fi device now while I still can.
Why is this a problem? If you want to keep your old contract, they allow you to keep it (even that is not a given), but you don’t get any changes on there. I truly and honestly don’t see why anyone can even remotely complain about this — unless you remember the salesmen telling you that you were going to be allowed to keep those terms for life *and* get new contracts with new subsidies and faster data?
If everyone took the stance you are taking companies would never change. At least when people complain in large enough groups about things they do not agree with or appreciate sometimes things get changed. Why complain? Because someone other than you doesn’t agree.
Carrot? There’s a carrot in there somewhere?
