Well, I’ve been flirting with getting Pixelmator instead of upgrading to CS6 lately.
1. Because it costs less to do so.
2. I have access to PS at work if I really need it (though its on Windows).
3. I don’t NEED to be running Photoshop at home. I just need a tool to do some image creation from time to time.
I guess I could try out the latest version of GiMP as well, though my past experience with it was not very good.
If it’s graphic’s you need to make try using Sketch. For me it does away with the need for Illustrator. Sketch V2.0 still has a few bugs and features missing but it does everything I need Illustrator for. I replaced Photoshop with Pixelmator when they launched on the MAS. Never felt the need for PS since then.
Why bother with GIMP. Try Pixelmator – you won’t be sorry.
I need to work with images in both RGB and CMYK. I need to make selection masks and edit images to a degree that the great new smaller apps can’t always give me tools for.
Adobe is leveraging the dependance of graphic artists and designers to gouge them for more frequent upgrades. Adobe has become Quark.

Or, if you want to use a much more powerful open-source vector editor that can match up with Illustrator, use Inkscape
