Infowars:
A bill already passed by the Senate and set to be rubber stamped by the House would make it mandatory for all new cars in the United States to be fitted with black box data recorders from 2015 onwards.
Although the text of legislation states that such data would remain the property of the owner of the vehicle, the government would have the power to access it in a number of circumstances.
Given the fact that the same bill also includes a controversial provision that would empower the IRS to revoke passports of citizens merely accused of owing over $50,000 in back taxes, stripping them of their mobility rights, could the mandatory black boxes or a similar technology be used for the same purpose?
The story gets a little hyperbolic with nightmare scenarios but some will still find this bill worrisome – I do.
I agree the bill is scary, but InfoWars? Really? Alex Jones is a nut.
I thought that was already a requirement to, in part, receive FHA and DOT approval for operation on US highways.
I had to delete InfoWars and PrisonPlanet from my RSS reader, too many conspiracy theories to keep up with them all.
Given that it says access also has to include consent from the vehicle owner (or I presume a court issued search warrant for things like a vehicular manslaughter case) there is a lot of hyperbole in the article. Who knows if it will even pass in the end. It might not. And if it does, there are almost 2 full years before those models will be on the market. Plenty of time for someone to sue and get the new law overturned as unconstitutional etc.
As for the IRS thing frankly I’m all for it. Why should someone that owes a huge pile of back taxes be allowed to leave the country to some place where they might be able to live free and happy and never pay that money. My only objection is that the amount is perhaps too low. Add another zero on there and you are talking something more reasonable in my book
And that whole ‘permission’ issue, given some of the jack ass drivers I have seen in LA, I’m not sure that’s such a bad idea. I would love to see cars that won’t turn on if you reek of the booze you just consumed or don’t allow your cell phone calls and texts to go through while the car is active unless the call is an outgoing to 911. I’d probably see a lot less accidents and near accidents with cars like that. Then put up mandatory cameras at lights and start ticketing the jackasses that do things like run the red, especially on left hand turns, when they were at a full stop when the light changed and should have stayed put.
