Samsung Electronics has shipped 5 million units of its “smart notepad”, the Galaxy Note, surpassing most expectations, according to analysts.
How can shipping 5 million units possible surpass anyone’s expectations? That is not the number of Galaxy Notes sold, that’s just the number that Samsung managed to get out of its factory.
Samsung could ship 100 million Galaxy Notes and have them sit in a warehouse somewhere — that doesn’t mean they sold 100 million. I’m never impressed with shipped numbers because they don’t mean anything.
Update: A number of sites are updating their stories noting that Samsung told them its 5 million sales, not shipments.

Not too hard to believe considering the company sells 50 million phones a quarter worldwide.

They for sure didn’t sell anything close to even 2 million of these over large plastic monstrosities.
For god sake, I saw a person try out a demo, he placed the thing to his head and he looked like a freaking idiot, to boot it’s so big that you need two hands to hold it.
I give it 2 weeks and the price will be dropped to get these things sold.
Yep, love it when Samsung pulls this garbage, always shipped numbers never TRUE SOLD NUMBERS.
At least Apple is honest with its numbers… And then again look at the lines for Apple Products, they don’t have to lie.
Sorry Samsung needs to fuge with the info to make it look as if it is playing in the same park as Apple… it’s Not!

Yep. Samsung pretty much always talks about sales into the channel, not to end users
As I’ve said elsewhere, it kind of doesn’t matter if it’s sold or shipped. The announced 2 million sold/shipped around a month ago. They didn’t just manufacture 3 million more for fun. They’re clearly selling to someone somewhere in decent volume.
In that case, shipped/sold = tomato/tomahto
Virtually every manufacturer tries to pump up its public sales numbers by forcing retailers to warehouse units, whether they’re selling or not.
Three million phones sitting in a distributor’s storage bin doesn’t mean three million new users generating income for carriers or app developers.Sold vs. shipped is a genuine difference. I’ll be curious to see confirmation of these numbers from an entity like NPD.
You know I live in NYC, a fairly large population, and I’ve yet to see one person holding up one of these giant phones to their ears. Now I’m not saying Samsung isn’t selling them, but I am saying that I should’ve seen a couple at this point.
