New York Times:
Foxconn, which manufactures more than 40 percent of the world’s electronics for such companies as Apple, Dell, Amazon and others, has pledged to sharply curtail the number of working hours within its Chinese factories and significantly increase wages, a move that could improve working conditions across China.
The shift comes after a far-ranging inspection by the Fair Labor Association, a monitoring group, found widespread problems.
Apple, in a statement, said the company fully supports the monitoring group’s recommendations. “We think empowering workers and helping them understand their rights is essential. Our team has been working for years to educate workers, improve conditions and make Apple’s supply chain a model for the industry, which is why we asked the F.L.A. to conduct these audits.”
Good on Apple for taking this seriously. I hope they continue to do so.
I hope other consumer tech companies do the same. Is anyone covering Dell or HP’s practices?
Of course, if the right was consistent, they would denounce Tim Cook as an anti-job-creator socialist who’s feeding the flames of class war.
Arguably, Apple is the only one that has been taking this seriously. Literally no other tech company has been taken to task over this, and Apple has been reporting on its supply chain since 2007.
Give them time.
I’ve worked more than 60 hours in a week. In fact I once logged 60 hours in 4 days. I’ve worked more than 7 days in a row without a day off plenty of times. Why is there no one crying foul in my defense? It’s factory work, get over it. The hours are long, the pay isn’t as good as it should be, and he work is monotonous drudgery. There are plenty of others in the US who do the same. We build your cars and aircraft, and we do it without public outcry for our well being.
