The stupid continues

There is just too much stupid to mention with this one.

  1. For the lazy ones:

“Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) announced what appears to be a penis iron in the new iPad, and folks are burning through their monthly 4G data plans in a few hours.”

“Ironically, the stock market continues to reward Apple and punish HP, which suggests the market remains consistently out of step with reality.”

“The way Cook is going, that fierce loyalty could soon become history.”

“to the very high temperature that the iPad operates at, whichConsumer Reports says could cause burns if held for a long period”

“In fact, a secret is that the Apple hardware often really isn’t that great — it is the overall wonderful experience that makes the company so successful.”

  2. Are there actually people out there who think it is Apple’s fault that 4G LTE is fast? Nobody seriously thinks that, right? It’s just muckraking “journalists” with deadlines who think it is a story. Right? RIGHT?

  3. I’m curious about the “using up the data plan” issue. I’m going to watch a movie. It’s two hours of movie. I watch it on my iPad 2, over 3G. Perhaps due to the 3G connection it has to buffer a couple of times. Perhaps I get to watch my two-hour movie in 2:05. Or 2:10. But I get my two hours of use out of it.

So now I watch the same movie on my third-generation iPad, over LTE. It’s still the same 2-hour movie. And I don’t ever buffer: I watch  my movie in 2:00.

Haven’t I received the same amount of data? In pretty close to the same amount of time?

I can see the argument that since LTE is so fast, that I might be more willing to use it to watch a movie than I would have been on 3G. But I’m assuming that the two devices receive the same amount of data. Would that be correct?

  4. Some content steamers gauge the speed of your connection and serve you a higher or lower quality version of the video accordingly. Assuming you were getting the HD version of the video you could conceivably use more data than if you were streaming the lower quality version, even if your videos streamed for the same amount of time. This is not really Apple’s fault; it is a carrier issue, and consumer beef should be with them instead of Apple.

  5. Depends on the source, they might be adjusting the quality based on the speed to try to avoid buffering, so users on slower connections often do use less data. But still, people burning through their data is no one but their fault.

  6. I’m not looking to point a finger and say “it’s so-and-so’s fault.” But there is an issue here, that a reasonable user should be forgiven for not knowing to question.

(by “reasonable user” I mean “me”, and aren’t I representative of everyone?)

So the issue is that having LTE instead of 3G, evidently, can result in the same piece of content being larger. You could (correctly) argue that the LTE user is getting a BETTER piece of content because it’ll be in HD, But you could also argue that the user himself wouldn’t want to make that trade.

So we have a reason here why a user might be less pleased with the third generation iPad than he would with an iPad 2: that this issue of “burning through the data cap more quickly” is at least in part not simply a behavioral thing.

I’ve been on the fence about getting an iPad ever since they came out. Just wasn’t high enough on my priority list to use scarce resources to get it. I’d have to say that I’m *less* likely to buy one now than I was a month ago.

  7. Uh, if you don’t want to burn through LTE, you can turn it off in settings.  Then your data consuption would be the same as it ever was when watching content under these circumstances.

  8. Jim – gotta agree here. Please preface any post headlines like this with “Enderle”. Or, for that matter, “Penis Iron”. “Imbecile Speaks” works as well.

  9. it’s not stupid so much as hyperbole. that said I agree that a warning about who wrote what is being linked would be highly in order.
