This is the beginning of T-Mobile’s death spiral. They have the “wrong” 3G frequencies to ever get iPhones. And a smaller coverage map. Their one asset, excellent customer service, is getting laid-off…
The surreal part will be when they file bankruptcy and the FCC prevents AT&T from buying up the spectrum and towers, screwing T-Mobile’s creditors.
Seriously, who really thought T-Mobile could survive for long without the merger with AT&T? Is anyone really surprised they’re starting the layoffs? I’m not.
If the FCC really thought T-Mobile was better off on its own, they really are the idiots I think they are.

As if AT&T itself wouldn’t have reduced a post-merger staff.
They made a pledge to keep the call centers (the topic of the letter) so any reductions would have been in other areas.
I don’t think the FCC thought anything about T-Mobile or cares. They just didn’t want one company getting all the spectrum etc in bulk. They want it to go open auction to be fair to all, same with user contracts. So this was their way of achieving that. Instead of some kind of compromise where they let ATT have the contracts on the agreement that they service them under T-Mobile terms for the current period plus perhaps some kind of required grandfathering. And then perhaps let ATT have the rights to the frequencies but not all the towers or such. and so on
