Jeff Sonderman for Poynter:
Jenna Myers Karvunidis says the Chicago Tribune and its Red Eye commuter paper seem to be “stealing scoops” from her and other amateur bloggers on the Tribune-owned ChicagoNow site.
This echoes TechCrunch alum MG Siegler’s recent rant at the Wall Street Journal, which he alleged stole his scoop about Apple’s acquisition of Chomp.
More than ever, journalists need to be careful to document their research and newspapers need to make sure that attribution rules are clearly spelled out.
How hard is it to attribute sources?
Is it possible that the WSJ took their information from the same source as MG…From Apple? If they did, is it incumbent that they search all bloggers/news stories to see if it has been mentioned previously? I don’t know the rules, I’m not a blogger or reporter…just askin’.
I dunno. If I interview someone and write up a piece. Then you interview the same person on the same subject, how would you know about my previous work. Why would your work be considered ripping me off? I don’t know the rules on these things but it seems that if we both use the same source, it would be easy to step on each others toes.
