Terrafugia, based in Woburn [MA] and founded in 2006 by MIT trained aeronautical engineers will debut the Transition® Roadable Aircraft (that’s a street legal airplane to my plebeian friends) at the 2012 New York International Auto Show.
At $279,000, this isn’t going to pop up in everyone’s driveway any time soon. But it’s a neat idea that’s getting a lot closer to reality than most “flying car” designs ever do.
I can think of nothing more terrifying than the average untrained idiot who can barely mange highly controlled navigation in two dimensions flying airplanes
Can you say MAJOR blind spot with the wings folded up for highway driving.
The thing is, that this is not a flying car. It’s a plane that you can drive on the road.
This was tried in the ’30’s, 40’s and beyond. It didn’t work then and it won’t work now.

One might argue that the lack of rigorous training is the cause of that problem. If one can pass the training and testing to earn a pilots licensee, one might become a better driver in the process.
One might wonder where the billions to upgrade the planet’s ATC facilities will come from.
