In an article about Apple’s attempts to thwart piracy on the internet, Grant apparently made the mistake of starting his post off with, “Avast! Apptrackr, a repository for cracked iOS apps, is under attack from Apple’s legal team.” For those not schooled in grammar-fu, the word literally means stop, cease. Apparently our usage of the word avast has incensed the Avast AntiVirus team so much that they’ve taken to tracking down our writer and tossing obscenities at him on his personal blog, as well as badgering him in his email inbox.

I agree about the douchebaggery shown in the instant message trail, but the email seems a lot more reasonable. I assume the email came first.
The last line of the email: “Please clarify somehow that Apptrackr is not an avast! product.”That would have been easily done with a line at the end of the article, “Apptrackr is not related to Avast! Antivirus.”I think adding a line like that to stem any possible confusion would have been the right thing to do. Not doing so seems an unnecessary digging in of the heels against something that would have *improved* the story.
And when you’re irrational, well, you can probably expect the other guy to be irrational too. (If the IM came first, of course, this is wrong. Then Avast! is being ridiculous, and Macgasm far less so. But just typing “Macgasm” leads me to believe the Macgasm folks are probably jackasses, too.)
