Indeed, the company specifies in its Terms of Service: “PayPal may […] require you to destroy the item and to provide evidence of its destruction.”
So the seller is out $2,500 and a violin that made it through WWII.
PayPal are scum, always coming up with new and inventive ways to fuck over the people who attempt to use their service. Personally I’m disappointed that The Loop uses PayPal to accept Membership payments, I’d rather use anything else.
