Apple is warning users of its 1st generation iPod nano of potential overheating problems.
According to Apple, the nanos in question were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. While the problem only happens in “very rare cases,” Apple does recommend customers stop using the 1st generation iPod nano.
Apple posted a note on its Website with instructions on how to order a replacement unit. There are also instructions on how to identify your iPod as one of the affected models.

They’re not entirely clear whether they’re replacing these with unused 1st-gen nanos, or with other, more current models.

I’m a registered owner of a 1st Gen iPod Nano. I got an email from Apple today about this… the downside is that you have to return the old Nano and wait up to 6 weeks for a replacement. Without knowing what I’d be getting in return makes me reluctant to go for it… after all, they say the defect is pretty rare.
How can any alternative be worse, unless you’re unreasonably attached to the original?
Bingo. I gave the Nano to my husband who IS unreasonably attached to it. He likes it. ~ shrug ~
