Philip Elmer-Dewitt:
“It’s time to repeal prohibition and take decisive action,” writes David Johnson in a new report made available to Fortune (and available for sale here). “Mac users are your HEROes and you should enable them not hinder them.”
“HERO,” it turns out, is a Forrester acronym for Highly Empowered and Resourceful Operatives — “the 17% of information workers who use new technologies and find innovative ways to be more productive and serve customers more effectively.”
It makes sense. Users around the world have embraced the iPhone, iPad and Macs, so it’s about time IT departments do the same.
It’ll be hard to change corporations that have been Window-centric for dozens of years. The changeover to Apple products must be rather disruptive to IT and their legacy applications attitude. It’s probably holding back a lot of companies that refuse to move to current consumer technology.
Unfortunately, if IT follows the same policies for Macs as they do for PCs, we’d still be using the first PowerPC and Intel Macs (which Lion won’t run on) and OS X 10.4. Office 2004 (if we’re lucky) and no iPhones. They’re too new and not commoditized.
Thank goodness for incompetent IT departments. We get cutting edge software and hardware while the PC people get three to six year old junk.
