∞ Report: Sony close to buying out Ericsson

Gamasutra:

As PlayStation maker Sony moves further into the world of connected devices, it may be finding its longstanding joint venture with mobile device maker Ericsson prohibitive to its operations.

That is why, according to the Wall Street Journal, sources say that that the company may soon wrest full control over the 50-50 joint venture created over a decade ago.

A buyout wouldn’t be cheap for Sony, but it might help the company as it seeks to further bolster its Android-based offerings going forward.

  1. That’s interesting, because a huge part of Ericsson’s business is communication infrastructure, which would be useless for Sony.
They could separate this part of the company from the consumer business or maybe sell it to one of Ericsson’s competitors, like Motorola, Siemens or Nokia.

As a side note: I loved Ericsson’s phones. They were sturdy, well built and had phenomenal reception.
My father still owns a 10 years old T39m with the original battery in there and it still goes for a week without charging.
