My sources tell me that RIM originally outsourced much of the hardware design and production of the PlayBook to mega-ODM Quanta.
From there, Amazon’s team determined they could build a tablet without the help and experience of Lab 126, so they turned to Quanta, which helped them “shortcut” the development process by using the PlayBook as their hardware template. Of course, it’s never quite that simple, and as I’m told Amazon ran into trouble, and eventually sacrifices were made (like using a slower processor).

If they sell it cheap enough it will sell. I figure they have to sell it for $299 or less to create a real problem for Apple. Apple can easily sell the low end iPad 2 for $399 if need be and still almost certainly make money. Amazon therefore needs to undercut that by $100 to gain traction and if it’s slower than the Playbook, even $299 might be only mildly interesting.

If they position it as a media consumption device it could do just fine. Books, movies, and music don’t need much horsepower. Also, it’s not going to be based on WebOS, so there’s a good chance it can still won’t feel as laggy.
Or it could be a dog.
I honestly hope this isn’t true.
