The fan on the tablet means that Intel still has a lot of work to do before it will gain any kind of acceptance in mobile. However, it doesn’t really say anything about Windows 8.
From what I saw, Windows 8 on the tablet doesn’t look too bad. Microsoft is clearly doing some good things to make Windows 8 more tablet friendly.
My questions are:
– How will the performance be when they use a more power efficient processor like an ARM processor. Will they be able to get the performance / battery life balance right?
– Just because the OS is touch friendly doesn’t mean the desktop applications are. If the applications need to be re-written to be touch friendly, then Windows 8 has no advantage over iOS or Android (actually, it would have quite a disadvantage with 100,000+ iOS iPad apps out there)
– A few years ago, having access to all of the Windows apps would be a big deal. However, with so many cheap apps for mobile platforms, its not clear to me that it is much of an advantage any more.
The only real advantage that I can see for Windows 8 would be for business users that would like to run the same applications at their desk as they do when on the road (to make the tablet a true 100% replacement for a laptop). The iPad does a lot, but is not always a laptop replacement.
My gut feel is that Microsoft is too late since iOS and even Android have such a big head start, However, with their huge PC marketshare, I guess you can never count Microsoft out.
It says a lot about Windows 8 if this is the best device it can run on.
Right now, this was the very best hardware available to showcase this flagship tablet product from Microsoft. The. Very. Best.
People who care about software make their own hardware.
The genuine touch-based UI seems well-thought-out and looks like it makes sense. But saddling the OS with the requirement to run standard desktop Windows for applications that will require a stylus to pull down menu items and click tiny checkboxes is ridiculous. Nobody wanted that in 1999, and I doubt they’ll want it now.
The Windows team has yet to learn how to jettison the past while it’s trying to plan for a future.
I still don’t get Windows 8 UI. The tiles all require managing. They require a significant amount of work even to set up.
Why would anyone who just wants “regular Windows” bother with the tiles, and why would anyone who just wants the tiles, want all the bother of setting them up?
At best, tiles are Active X controls 2.0
