Among the top six notebook vendors — Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Samsung — Apple ranked last in global market share in the second quarter of 2011, according to Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore.
But that’s without the iPad.
With it, Apple was the single largest notebook vendor during the period, with a 20 percent market share — greater than the 15 percent held by PC giant Hewlett-Packard.
That’s a mighty big leap. Steve Jobs is the first person to trump the iPad as the harbinger of a “Post-PC” era, so I’m not sure adding the iPad into that mix is a meaningful statistic. But it does go to show that the iPad is an incredibly important product for Apple right now.
Considering the iPad in this category is interesting if only for the fact that it crippled the netbook market.
I think it should be included, but the category should be renamed to “portable computing.” After all, if you discount the iPad from this category, then you should also discount any notebook computer that is used primarily to browse the web, read email, play games, facebook, twitter, etc.
What’s important is that people are being these devices to do particular tasks, not the form factor of the device. The iPad definitely belongs in this category.
Indeed, iPad revenue was higher than Mac revenue last quarter.
But it’s not a notebook…Steve Jobs had the only reasonable computer -> car market comparison I’ve heard when he said that the PC (or Mac) is a truck, and the iPad represents a new class of car, the implication being that more people need a car.
So far, he seems to be right.
Well put Peter. Every day that I’m using my iPad I will find things that it’s great for and areas where using a Mac makes more sense, but the power and importance of the device cannot be denied.
I agree. Not a day goes by in university that I don’t witness somebody cursing their netbook to the high heavens because of limitations that should have been apparent to them before the purchase. Most of those don’t even concern the software.
I’ll bet that’s because the software is at least a known malefactor, while the netbook is an unexpected wonderland of cheap construction.
I hate those things with a passion. An infinitesimal number of them are actually good, but those are closer to subnotebooks than what we understand to be netbooks, in build quality and price.
Just another way for the stupid masses to be sucked into buying shit they don’t need.
