The big news in the past year has been the explosion of Google Android handsets and this means our competitors are responding. Because they are not responding with innovation, they’re responding with lawsuits. We have not done anything wrong and these lawsuits are just inspired by our success.
You could say a lot of things about Apple, but saying the company that brought us the iPod, iPhone, iPad, iTunes Store, successful retail and so much more, lacks innovation is just stupid.
They are suing because they don’t like being the RnD department for the entire tech industry. It’s Samung and HTC and others who lack innovation.
Oh, and that Android app launcher looks awfully like Springboard – that must be some Google innovation right there huh ?
It’s quite sad to see this from Schmidt, especially considering Google’s only main innovation was to copy MS and give stuff away for free. I’m sure it was just coincidence that he got an iPhone early and Android was the quickest facsimile of the iPhone when it originally looked like they were ripping off RIM.
Squirrel Boy should really know learn to keep quiet. He was nothing more than a holdover until the true talent took over at Google while he openly acknowledged that Google’s intention was to track evrything you do.
He should tell Google to stop imitating others’ work and stick to what they know best: pissing off content owners and taking money from fraud pharmaceutical companies that sell prescription meds to kids.

Take a look at the form factor for Android phones pre- and post-iPhone. Then let’s talk about who lacks innovation.

Do you really think iOS5 is innovative? Nearly all the features could be found on other OSs.
Please understand the difference between innovate and invent. There were smart phones before the iPhone that had a lot of the features that Apple’s had: web browser, address book, calendar, apps, could sync to your computer, etc. Just look at the Treos running PalmOS. But Apple made it into something that people can actually use.
Innovate means taking something and making it better in a dramatic or novel way. Invent means making something in the first place. So is iOS 5 innovative? We’ll have to wait and see. But I would absolutely say that iOS was innovative even if phones had the same features before the iPhone.
Linux phones have been around well before iOS. The difference between a Linux phone and Android is they copied the iOS user interface.
Google is very innovative, but Android, not so much.
Let’s see, innovation is:
A) inventing great products and disclosing the invention in exchange for legal protection
B) running open source software next to ads
Yes, Apple sucks cock. Yet, every computing device you use was inspired by Apple. Whatever graphical use interface your OS is, is based on the Mac, your phone (unless your still using a Razr or Blackberry) is based on the iPhone, your tablet like device is based on the iPad… They’re all based on Apple innovations…

MS is a lot of good things, quick easy, dirty, necessary, business orieneted, commodity driven, market driven, etc. We get good enough computers at a more than decent price. There’s always a market for that.

I think Schmidt is confusing innovation with invention. Apple is an innovative company, but from its foundation to the present has been mostly devoid of inventiveness. They have been more or less adroit in their ability to take the inventions of others, identify emerging markets, and create well-suited derivative products.
The simple fact is that Apple is losing the smart phone war for the same reasons it lost the desktop war. Apple insists on the “have it our way; you’re too stupid to know what you want” mentality. Thank you, no.
