It wasn’t that long ago that Apple first opened the doors to the App Store and now the company has reportedly surpassed 500,000 approved apps.
[ad#Google Adsense 300×250 in story]That figure comes from a group of companies that have been involved in the app business since it launched: 148Apps, a mobile app blog; Chomp, an app search engine; and Chillingo, a game developer.
The companies have put together a Facebook page celebrating the milestone.
Here are a few fun facts about the App Store that the companies have put together:
- It would cost $891,982.24 and over 7 terabytes to download all available applications.
- Approximately 36% of all apps are free and paid apps have an average price of $3.64
- Angry Birds released by Chillingo and developed by Rovio has held the number 1 paid spot more than any other app at 275 days total.

I’m not sure what I’m missing…
There are 147,966 free apps. There are 244,720 paid apps. That’s 419,686 apps that are either paid or free.
So what are the remaining 80,314 apps?
I think these guys jumped the gun a bit.
Not every app that’s ever been approved is still available in the App Store. Sometimes developers pull them off for their own reasons, sometimes they’re forced to by third parties. Many of them were pulled when Apple purged the “overtly sexual” apps last February.
I’m guessing that’s where most of the missing 80K went.
