So far, three carriers in Canada have confirmed that the personal hotspot feature in iOS 4.3 will be free if you already subscribe to the 1GB plan. In the U.S. AT&T requires you have the $45 plan and Verizon requires an additional 2GB plan be purchased.
After the iPad 2 reveal this morning during Apple’s media event, Rogers confirmed that Personal Hotspot in iOS 4.3 will be available to Rogers/Fido customers who have a 1GB or higher data plan for free.

That’s the same as their tethering rules, right?
I imagine. My plan has free tethering. I have 6Gs.
You realize that this seriously changes the economics of our decisions. Do we really need to pay 130$ for 3G if we have iPhones (or other with same options) with the Hotspot feature? That 130 gets you double the memory plus cash in your pocket 😉

How wonderful would it be for consumers if American carriers were treated like the utilities they used to be?
It’s nice to have options. The WiFi hotspot supposedly a real battery killer, so it might not be the perfect solution for everyone, and not everyone has an iPhone. But I feel a lot better holding onto that 6GB plan of mine, knowing that I can use it this way with my iPad. Good move, Fido.
