We’ve all seen the funny ways auto-corrected texts have played havoc with people’s conversations, but one strange text didn’t turn out so funny.
[ad#Google Adsense 300×250 in story]When a man sent his friend a text that contained the word “mutter,” his phone changed the word to “nutter.” According to CNET, a “mutter” is a “mother’s boy” and a “nutter” is an insane person.
The two exchanged texts until the insulted man went to his house, where he was killed. The dead man reportedly had 104 injuries on his body.
It wasn’t reported what brand phone the man was using. The man was charged with murder and convicted of manslaughter.
Manslaughter, really? It certainly sounds like murder.

I suspect you’re just confused about who killed whom. Read the CNet article, then follow the link to dailymail.co.uk.
Neil B. sent Joseph W. a text that said he was a nutter. Joseph was offended. Further texts ensued. Neil said he’d meant “mutter”. Joseph didn’t accept that. (And it’s entirely possible, if you think about it, that Neil actually typed ‘nutter’ but recanted when Joseph got angry. Considering that he was relatively up-front about other events that ensued, it’s entirely possible that Neil really used that obscure word “mutter”). Joseph went over to Neil’s house with “a big kitchen knife”. Seeing the knife, Neil grabbed a knife. A fight ensued, and Joseph ended up dead, with 104 injuries (but that number includes bruises as well).
Apparently, though, it was a little worse than that, according to the dailmail.co.uk (linked from cnet): Neil had placed several knives around the house in advance of this encounter. When he got Joseph in the leg, Joseph tried to hide in a bathroom in Neil’s place. Neil then broke down the door and continued the fight, dealing at least one into the heart. Some doubt was cast onto the idea that Joseph actually brought a knife to Neil’s place, but lawyers cast doubt on everything they can, so who knows. The jury accepted that Joseph had provoked the fight and that Neil was in his own place, but they did not accept that his level of response counted as self-defense, it seems.
It seems that “nutter” was accurate after all… the software was right.
I wonder if it was an Android phone? hmmm…

Murder implies factors that don’t appear in this instance. It’s definitely manslaughter, and could be viewed as murder, but that depends on the lawyers and judge really. Without all of the specifics it’s difficult to truly place a finger on it.
For what it’s worth, it sounds more like aggravated manslaughter to me, but it’s been 20 years since I’ve been involved in law. Things change over time.
I think “nutter” does apply though, regardless of the crime.

I still find myself wondering if he typed ‘nutter’ on purpose, then recanted. I don’t understand all criteria for when something counts as murder, but I think that part of what got him the ‘murder’ accusation was that when the guy retreated into a bathroom and locked himself in, the homeowner kicked in the door to finish the job.
Personally, I think both of them sound like people I’d hate having as neighbors.
