How to play rhythm guitar like Jimi Hendrix

This lesson is from Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra. I’ve always loved the way Jimi embellished the chords he played—this lesson shows you how to do it.

At The Wirecutter, we believe in keeping gadgets alive for as long as possible through repairs, upgrades, upcycling, and whatever else it takes to get them to the end of their useful life. But we also understand that the time will come when we need to dispose of our electronics. So we’ve compiled a list of alternatives to putting them out on the curb. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s a lot easier than you may think.

It’s always worthwhile to know your options.

Much respect Gruber.

“This latest episode raises serious concerns under both U.S. and EU competition law,” Gutierrez wrote. “It continues a troubling pattern of behavior by Apple to exclude and diminish the competitiveness of Spotify on iOS and as a rival to Apple Music, particularly when seen against the backdrop of Apple’s previous anticompetitive conduct aimed at Spotify … we cannot stand by as Apple uses the App Store approval process as a weapon to harm competitors.”

This could get ugly very quickly.

Millions of people are Googling to see what the hell Nougat is this morning.

But CSS wouldn’t be introduced for five years, and wouldn’t be fully implemented for ten. This was a period of intense work and innovation which resulted in more than a few competing styling methods which just as easily could have become the standard.

Fascinating read. The screenshot of Mosaic certainly took me back.

It is absolutely stunning how far we’ve come in gaming in a relatively short period of time.

Prime Day is a one-day only global shopping event exclusively for Prime members. On Tuesday, July 12, the second annual Prime Day will be the biggest global Amazon event ever. Members in the U.S. can shop starting at midnight PT, with new deals starting as often as every five minutes throughout the day.

With the new that Evernote is limiting free accounts and hiking prices, it’s only natural that some people will be looking for alternatives. Apple’s new Notes for iPhone or iPad and Notes for Mac might just make for that alternative. But how to migrate all of those notes? It’s easier than you think if you have a Mac running OS X 10.11.4 or higher.

Clearly not everyone is going to get rid of Evernote, but I talked to a lot of people that are. If you are considering it, he’s a run through on how to do it.

Pissed off Steve Jobs

I absolutely loved Steve when he was upset. Say what has to be said, and do what has to be done. I was in the audience for many of these moments.

You can grab it from the Avid Web site.

The UAD-2 Satellite USB DSP Accelerator is a sleek, powerful way for Windows-based PC users to “supercharge” their systems and run larger mixes filled with acclaimed UAD plug-ins.

I love UA gear.

John Gruber on Facebook’s decision to prioritize friends over news sites:

The idea that Facebook was going to “save” the news industry, or even that Facebook traffic is something that news organizations should bank on for the future, is just goofy.

I agree completely. I didn’t link to this earlier because it didn’t surprise me in the least. The fact is, people would rather hear from their family and friends on Facebook than news sites.

If you use Google Now, you’ll want to take a look at this site.

I love Evan Calkins’ cards. He owns a small letterpress shop in Washington and does great work. Now he’s offering calligraphy cards, as well. I’ll be ordering some of these.

Warren had different beefs with Google, Apple and Amazon, but the common thread was that she accused each one of using its powerful platforms to “lock out smaller guys and newer guys,” including some that compete with Google, Apple and Amazon.

And a comment from Spotify’s Jonathan Prince:

“Apple has long used its control of iOS to squash competition in music, driving up the prices of its competitors, inappropriately forbidding us from telling our customers about lower prices, and giving itself unfair advantages across its platform through everything from the lock screen to Siri. You know there’s something wrong when Apple makes more off a Spotify subscription than it does off an Apple Music subscription and doesn’t share any of that with the music industry. They want to have their cake and eat everyone else’s too.”

The Apple I/O death chart

Nilay Patel wrote on The Verge about all of the I/O that Apple has done away with over the years. Personally, I agree with Apple’s decisions, including the latest MacBook with its one USB-C port and the removal of the headphone jack, if that comes to be. I also agree with Gruber’s take on the issue.

A history of game controllers

I remember many of these.

The Wirecutter: >When was the last time you backed up all your important documents and photos? Last month? Last year? Never? Everyone should back up their data, but setting up a good backup system can seem time-consuming and intimidating. As a result, some people (including me) put off this daunting task indefinitely, hoping nothing goes wrong. Rather than stress out or delay it any longer, take 15 minutes and set up a system that will back up your files automatically—both to an external drive and to encrypted cloud storage—without any regular action from you. Let’s get it done!

There’s never a time when you should put off doing backups. I did a few months ago and sure enough, I had a hard drive crash and lost months worth of data. If you have a managed it support clovis specialist at your company, they will help you discover what should be backed up, find out where to back up the data, and set up a proficient recovery system.

However, do you know how can you reset your Windows password on your computer? Using this windows password reset tool here, you’ll be able to recover your Windows password easily and quickly as it’s also considered as the best tool that helps you reset your Windows password. The Washington Post:

Long relegated to the Air and Space Museum’s basement gift shop, “Star Trek’s” USS Enterprise has moved to the central atrium. The newly restored, 11-foot-long studio model of the fictional starship, used for special-effects shots in the original TV series, will be unveiled Tuesday. (Just in time for the museum’s all-night 40th birthday celebration.)

“It’s been brought into the light because, over time, its historical significance has grown,” museum conservator Malcolm Collum says.

Collum and his team have restored the ship to what it looked like in 1967 during the filming of the “Trouble with Tribbles” episode, which is when the last-known modification of the ship took place.

I first saw this model on my honeymoon and thought it bizarre it was relegated to the back of the museum’s gift shop. Glad to see it got the conservation and display it deserves.

His lawsuit says he was “the first to file a device so designed and aggregated as to have created a novel combination of media and communication tools… whose identity was, since then, hijacked and exploited by Apple’s iPhones, iPods, iPads and others”.

I was at the event when Apple unveiled the iPhone and picked mine up the day before they went on sale. In some ways it’s amazing to me that the iPhone has been around for so long, but in many ways, it seems like it’s been around forever. It changed the way I do everything—it’s hard for me to remember a time when I didn’t have an iPhone. A distant memory.

Cheers, iPhone.

Apple changed its “Select Your Country” European web site to reflect the brackets for the Euro 2016 championship. Great idea.

It’s things like this that make Apple a great company, and one that I respect. They truly want to make their products accessible and functional for all users.

Beginning today, the prices for our Plus and Premium tiers will change for new subscriptions, and access from Evernote Basic accounts will be limited to two devices. Current subscribers and Basic users who are using more than two devices will have some time to adjust before the changes take effect. If you are impacted, look for a message from us in the coming days.

It’ll be interesting to see if there’s any fallout from this.

Words fail me.

This is a nice collection, showing off the change in look of Apple elements like the Finder, the dock, and system icons, along with shots of similar Windows elements (if that’s your thing).

Some of these shots are gorgeous.

David Drake, writing for Rolling Stone:

Drake’s “Hotline Bling” video, Taylor Swift’s tour movie and the Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” have something in common: They’ve all been funded by Apple. The world’s most valuable company has thrown its immense resources into making music videos, concert documentaries and documentaries and, above all, scoring album exclusives. The tech behemoth’s top execs are involved in pop-star projects: Apple CEO Tim Cook had a hand in the production of M.I.A.’s “Borders” video.

“Tim weighed in on that one in particular,” says Larry Jackson, who is in charge of Apple’s original-music content. The most recent major exclusive was Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book, which customers could hear only on Apple Music because Chance has no label and was not selling a download version.

And:

Jackson likes to repeat a story from Iovine: “There are two buzzards sitting on a wire; one buzzard’s sitting up there waiting for something to die; the other buzzard’s saying, ‘Fuck this waiting-to-die shit, let’s go kill something.’ That’s the philosophy. You just have to go and get it done.”

Spotify is the big dog in this game, but Apple has significant resources from which to draw. One way Apple can up their game is by focusing on ways to improve both iTunes and the Apple Music app. Lots of room for improvement, and small changes there will leverage far more than any single exclusive content deal.
