∞ Mac OS X vs. Windows 7: Who has the best upgrade?

Snow LeopardI wrote a story at CNET earlier today asking the question: Who offers the best upgrade, Apple or Windows?

The basis of the argument is this. Both companies are upgrading an existing operating system and both claim better performance with their upgrades.

Apple has made no bones about the fact that Snow Leopard is a maintenance release designed to improve stability and integrated technologies. Microsoft is trying to get past the disaster of Vista, but the OS still the same core engine.

Overall, I think that Apple coming off its most successful release ever with Leopard with have a better upgrade than Microsoft. They are going to have to convince the consumer than Windows 7 is better than the experience they had with Vista.

That will be an uphill battle.

∞ Line 6, Planet Waves show off new iPhone app

One of the highlights of Monday’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote was when Apple’s Scott Forstall called Line 6 and Planet Waves to the stage for a demo.

Line 6 Vetta IIThere was probably nobody in the audience more excited than me when Line 6 co-founder Marcus Ryle took the stage. Accompanied by a guitar player and a helper turning the dials, Ryle debuted a new app that allows you to control your guitar amp and guitar using the iPhone.

The app works like this: the iPhone connects to a small hardware box with an output to your Line 6 Vetta II amp. When the iPhone app is running, you can scroll through the presets on the amp, change settings, load new presets or save presets to your iPhone.

In fact, you can load all of your favorite presets into your iPhone, go to a gig or rehearsal and load everything in to someone else’s Vetta II amp. Changing the amp is only one aspect of what the software can do.

variaxYou can also change the settings on Line 6’s Variax guitar. If you’ve ever used one of the company’s guitars you know how versatile an instrument it is. You can change tunings, body, pickups and many other options with the touch of a button–now that button is one the iPhone.

“It was a natural for us,” Marcus Ryle, co-founder of Line 6, told The Loop, after finishing his demo. “The iPhone is such an incredibly powerful platform, it just seemed like a great opportunity for musicians.”

It makes sense for Line 6 to be the first to offer a app and a device like this–they are the leader in amp modeling technology for digital musicians. But was developing for the iPhone more difficult than making a Mac application–not according to Ryle.

“Development went well,” said Ryle. “We only started a short time ago, but with the tools that Apple provides for the iPhone it went very well.”

scalewizardLine 6 isn’t doing the development of the app and hardware alone. In fact, a lot of the credit goes to Planet Waves, a music accessory company that already has a couple of iPhone apps under its belt: Chord Master and Scale Wizard.

Planet Waves is a D’Addario company. Any guitar player will immediately recognize that name as being one of the premier brands in the music industry, but usually in hardware, not software.

“We weren’t software guys until the iPhone came out,” said Jim D’Addario chairman & CEO of D’Addario. “Now we have an entire development team.”

Both D’Addario and Ryle commented on how making this app has lead to other ideas, so it should be interesting to see what the companies can do together in the future. Whatever it is, you can be sure it will be great for musicians.

∞ Apple unveils iPhone 3G S

Apple used its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) to unveil the iPhone 3G S, that features improved performance, longer battery life and an autofocus camera and video recording.

The iPhone 3G S offers speeds up to twice as fast as the iPhone 3G, according to Apple. This is real speed that can be realized in launching applications and rendering Web pages. The new iPhone also takes advantage of the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard for 3D graphics, allowing games to render better than ever, the company said.

iphone3gsOne of the really cool features of the iPhone is the autofocus camera. During the demonstration at the keynote, Apple showed how the camera could focus on different items by simply tapping on them.

For instance, if you are taking a picture of a flower with a house in the background, you can focus on the house by tapping on it. The house then becomes the focal point of the photo and the camera focuses on that.

The new iPhone also comes with one of the most requested features from users: Video recording. When you enter the camera interface with the new iPhone, there is a slider that will change your camera from still mode to video mode.

A voice control feature in the iPhone 3G S gives you hands free operation of popular iPhone and iPod functions. Perhaps the funniest parts of voice control is the ability to create a genius playlist on the fly by saying “play more songs like this.”

The new iPhone also includes built-in Nike + iPod support, a digital compass and of course, the over 100 new features that will comes as part of iPhone OS 3.0.

One of the highlights of the keynote was the demo of a new feature called Find My iPhone. This is a new feature for MobileMe users that will allow you to find your phone and see its location on a map. You can send the phone an audio alert, even if the phone is in silent mode, allowing you to locate it.

If you discover the iPhone is lost and you can’t recover it, you can send a remote wipe command to completely wipe the phone of all its contents.

iPhone 3G S will be available in the US on June 19 and will cost $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the new 32GB model.
