40% of U.S. teens use an iPhone

Apple has done a great job of attracting young users with the iPod and keeping them as they grow up and purchase an iPhone.

Set default address to iCloud.com

A reader sent a note today letting me know that you can now set the default email address in your iCloud account to @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com. I don’t know how long it’s been like that, but I hadn’t noticed it before.

Just sign-in to iCloud, open the Mail app and go to Settings > Composing.

Lens flare isn’t unique to iPhone 5

Barney Britton and Kelcey Smith for Digital Photography Review:

The most likely cause of the iPhone 5’s purple haze is probably lens flare and internal reflections in the camera lens assembly. All lenses are succeptable to lens flare to some degree, and as you can see from the images at the top of this page, the iPhone 4S isn’t immune either (ditto the iPhone 4 and competitive smartphones from other manufacturers).

It’s a shame that this even has to be said, but apparently many tech writers are so profoundly stupid, they don’t understand that.

Angry Birds Star Wars

Rovio Entertainment and Lucasfilm Ltd. announced today a new blockbuster entertainment franchise collaboration; Angry Birds Star Wars. Launching worldwide on November 8, the unique partnership will combine all the fun of the classic Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space with the characters, stories and settings of the epic space fantasy, Star Wars.

New York Times doesn’t understand

Stewart confuses the Maps app, a software application, with the mapping data that underlies it and the algorithms for driving directions that Apple put in place.

The New York Times should know better, but Glenn Fleishman sets them straight.

Foxconn denies strike at iPhone 5 factory

Foxconn officials on Saturday issued a statement denying a strike hit the company’s Zhengzhou iPhone plant on Friday, claiming instead that the factory was the site of two small altercations days earlier which had no impact on production.

‘Best iPhone yet’

The Apple iPhone 5 is among the best smart phones in our Ratings and the best iPhone yet, our completed tests confirm.

I still don’t trust Consumer Reports.

Exchange and iOS

Mike Rose:

The issue manifests as one recipient declining an invitation which mistakenly cancels the meeting for everyone, “hijacking” the meeting out from under the original organizer.

Reports are the bug has actually gotten worse with iOS 6.

Netbot

Netbot is a full-featured iPhone App.net client.

Do Not Disturb

I’m loving these articles that Dave Caolo is putting together. This one is on how to use the Do Not Disturb feature on the iPhone.

The Plagiarius Award

Initiated already back in 1977 by Prof. Rido Busse, the negative award “Plagiarius” serves to inform the public about the problem of fakes and plagiarisms and the negative impacts they have on not only the economy as a whole, but also on small companies and designers.

Samsung could win this hands down.

Homeless Nokia

“We are evaluating different options for non-core parts, such as real estate holdings, and that includes the headquarters,” spokeswoman Maija Taimi told Reuters.

Nokia makes fun of the iPhone 5 and it can’t even sell enough phones to keep its headquarters.

It’s time for RIM to quit

Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system is gaining on Research In Motion, a new study says, but it still has a long way to go before catching Android and iOS.

It’s one thing to lose ground to iOS and Android, but when Windows Phone OS catches you, you’re done.

Create custom iPhone vibration patterns

Or, get really creative and use a little morse code to spell out your wife’s name, for example, or “GOD NO” if it’s your in-laws.

LOL!

Good article from Dave.

AT&T says dropped calls down 35% in Bay area

It is a measure of just how much criticism AT&T got not long ago about service in and around San Francisco that the communications giant is now running a Bay Area-wide campaign touting a 35 percent decrease in dropped calls.

I still have problems in large cities, including those in the Bay area, but maybe it’s getting better.

App design

Gannon Burgett does a great job of taking a look at the design choices we see in apps these days. I think Apple users are much more picky over design elements, which is a good thing for the platform.

Solving a problem

Apple changed its developer guidelines to prohibit apps from showing for purchase, other than your own. I agree with Gruber — I don’t see the problem this solves.

Apple’s Scott Forstall problem

There can be no doubt that as the Senior Vice President of iOS Software, Maps falls squarely on Scott Forstall’s shoulders.
